| The all-important family dinner table. Anakin Skywalker and his mother await the hand of destiny in a small, quiet corner of the galaxy. This kitchen should look a little familiar, combining elements of rugged primitive construction with high technology, much as did the desert homestead of Luke Skywalker's Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.Young Anakin's bedroom, filled with all the spare technology that a young boy could want. The dangerous asteroid belt in the Hoth system was formed billions of years ago by the collision of two planets. Millions of boulders and rocky asteroids careen through space in orbit together, forming a deadly swarm and a menace to navigation. Entering such a field with a spacecraft would be sheer suicide. On some asteroids there are delicate crystal ferns, which could be a primitive silicon-based life form. Over the centuries smugglers and criminals have from time to time built bases in some of the larger asteroids, including a notorious pirate who was said to have imported huge space slugs to guard his hideouts. After the Battle of Hoth , as the Millennium Falcon tries to escape pursuing Star Destroyers in the asteroid field, it is nearly swallowed by a titanic, centuries-old space slug. The gas giant Bespin is located along the Ison Corridor, a natural spacelane just off the Corellian Trade Spine. A lightly-traveled world with twin moons, vast Bespin swirls with fantastic cloud formations and endless sky. The rare and valuable Tibanna gas drifts through the exotic atmosphere, and high above the clouds floats the fantastic gas mining colony of Cloud City. In this ethereal realm, Han Solo arrives with the Millennium Falcon in search of an old friend: Lando Calrissian, a former con-man and smuggler who may offer safe haven to the beleaguered fugitives. But sanctuary on Bespin may be as illusory as its gossamer clouds.Discovered by one of Darth Vader's probe droids, the Rebel Base on Hoth faces invasion by a landing force deployed from Imperial Fleet star destroyers. Echo Base is protected by a powerful energy shield, but this defense can do nothing to stop ground units from advancing. Under the command of the capable General Veers, the Imperial Blizzard Force marches on the Rebel base, unleashing fearsome AT-AT walkers and legions of snow troopers. The Rebels' General Carlist Rieekan oversees a hurried retreat as Commander Luke Skywalker leads the Rogue Squadron of snowspeeders in a delaying action against the dreaded Imperial forces.Rebel losses are devastating and the snow trenches and defensive emplacements are smashed disastrously by the almost-unstoppable Imperial walkers. Behind the shelter of the mountain housing Echo Base, Rebel transports are desperately loaded and dispatched into space, carrying evacuated Rebel personnel and material as Echo Base collapses in ruin under the press of Imperial occupation. In the shadow of the remote gas giant Yavin, near its fourth moon, a great battle for the very survival of the Rebellion takes place. Using a homing beacon aboard the Rebel craft Millennium Falcon, Darth Vader finally tracks down the location of the Rebel base on Yavin 4. Under the command of Grand Moff Tarkin, the Empire's planet-destroying Death Star emerges from hyperspace in the vicinity of Yavin and orbits the planet as it prepares to destroy the Rebel Base and all hope for freedom in the galaxy.Against the monstrous battle station the Rebellion sends up a small fleet of 30 one-man fighters, in a desperate effort to bomb the Death Star's single critical weak spot. Considered harmless by the Empire, these fighters dart through the hail of defensive laser fire designed to destroy larger, slow-moving capital ships. Darth Vader orders TIE fighters into action against the Rebel craft, piloting an advanced TIE prototype personally. Soon the superior Imperial technology takes its toll, and the Rebel pilots are annihilated one by one until only three remain. As the station draws into firing range on the Rebel Base, Luke Skywalker focuses his concentration on his one crucial chance. In the heat of the final moment, the young farm boy from Tatooine turns off his targeting computer and trusts the power of the Force to guide him.A huge floating city, it is suspended about 60,000 kilometers above the core of the gas giant Bespin. The city's main industry is mining Tibanna gas, but under Baron Administrator Lando Calrissian, Cloud City has become a resort with casinos, luxury hotels and shops. The cityscape has a rounded, decorative look with tall towers and large plazas. The city is 16 kilometers in diameter and 17 kilometers tall, including the huge unipod that hangs beneath. It has 392 levels and a surface plaza concourse. Upper levels house resorts and casinos, while middle levels are for heavy industry and worker housing. Lower levels are the site of the Tibanna gas processing facilities and the 3,600 repulsorlift engines that anchor the city in place. A central wind tunnel nearly a kilometer in diameter channels wind gusts to give the city some stability. Cloud City is the destination of Han Solo and his passengers aboard the Millennium Falcon after their escape from an Imperial task force. The seat of galactic government for as long as records have existed, Coruscant is the jewel of the Core Worlds and the center of the known universe. Nearly all of the planet's land is covered by an unending, multileveled megalopolis whose foundations were laid at the beginning of the Old Republic, more than a thousand generations ago. Kilometer-high skyscrapers-some extending to the lower fringes of the atmosphere-and numerous spaceports cover the capital, Imperial City. The lowest, darkest levels of Imperial City were abandoned long ago and are now home to wrecked equipment, countless vermin and subhuman beings moving through the shadows. Above all else, Coruscant is a potent symbol, the center of power, authority, and order, and whoever controls it is perceived as the rightful successor to galactic rule. The vast population of Imperial City uses many means of transportation, including ocean-liner sized air buses which dock at dizzying heights above ground level.Guided by a spirit message from his mentor Ben Kenobi, Luke Skywalker seeks out the hidden planet Dagobah to find the Jedi Master Yoda. Luke finds a swamp world covered in dense jungles, lagoons, and thick vegetation. Dagobah is filled with weird forms of life inhabiting every corner and crevice of the damp, foggy environment. Somewhere within the mists and murk is the Jedi sage who will take Luke on the path to becoming a true Jedi.Designed and constructed in secret, the Death Star is the brainchild of the sinister Grand Moff Tarkin, governor of the Imperial Outland Regions. In orbital construction yards circling a remote planet code-named Despayre, this battle station was pieced together by technicians, slaves, and titanic robot factory machines. The completed Death Star is powered by a hypermatter reactor and is capable of destroying an entire planet with its prime weapon, a horrific superlaser. This abomination is the galaxy's ultimate weapon, and the greatest symbol of the Emperor's absolute power. The battle station is now fully operational, and the Emperor has ordered the Imperial Senate dissolved. Tarkin's doctrine of Rule by Fear will replace the bureaucracy as the Death Star drifts menacingly through the galaxy, frightening into submission those worlds with rebellious leanings. Meanwhile, the rebellious young Senator-Princess Leia Organa has been brought on board as Darth Vader's prisoner. After the destruction of the first Death Star, the Emperor ordered the construction of a second planet-destroying space station even larger than the first. Assembled in orbit around the emerald moon of Endor, the second Death Star is protected by an energy shield projected from the planet surface below. This titanic weapon is only part of an insidious plan to draw the Rebels into doomed combat, for the Death Star's incomplete structure hides its full operational capabilities, and it is a giant trap waiting to fatally ensnare the Rebel Fleet.
